What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a modern health care system based on the premise that the body is capable of healing given adequate rest, nutrition and a properly functioning nervous system and providing that no irreparable tissue damage has occurred. The nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) control all other systems of the body.

The spine is the framework which supports and protects the spinal cord. Most nerves pass from the spinal cord through small openings in the spine to various muscles, organs,  bones and even the skin. Your spine is made up of 24 moveable bones, 23 discs, 12 pairs of ribs and has attachments to hundreds of ligaments and muscles.

Because of the spine's complexity, it's normal movements are easily disrupted. Falls, incorrect lifting, stress, repetitive movements and faulty posture can all disrupt the normal mechanics of the spine. These areas of abnormal movement are what chiropractors call subluxations. Subluxations have several possible components: disrupted joint movement, nerve irritation, muscle spasm or weakness at either the site of the subluxations or along the course of the irritated nerve and increased/decreased blood flow in the immediate area. Because nerves send energy to organs, a subluxation can affect health and wellbeing. Subluxations are common and do not always produce pain or obvious symptoms. However some conditions can be extremely painful such as acute low back pain, acute back pain, headaches and migraines. Spinal degeneration can occur with chronic subluxations.

Chiropractors analyse the spine for subluxations and, if found, perform a procedure called an adjustment. Dr Collis uses the body's innate ability to restore itself when positioned accurately. Before this, however, the Chiropractor needs to know details of past medical history, accidents and lifestyle. A thorough examination may include postural evaluation, spinal analysis, orthopaedic and neurological testing. Xrays (free for Medicare card holders) may be required not only to evaluate the condition and spinal alignment, but to help rule out any underlying disease. Generally you will receive your first adjustment once these tests have been completed and analysed by Dr Collis. Once better movement has been restored to the spine, many patients find it beneficial that it be maintained, finding that regular checkups allow their spine to function optimally and offering their bodies the best chance of feeling and functioning well.

What techniques do we use?

Dr Collis uses the following techniques for simple, accurate and gentle adjustments: Thompson Table, Diversified Technique, Palmer Upper Cervical Specific, Applied Kinesiology, Chiropractic Biophysics CBP. We can also perform Postural Screenings to see if you're standing straight and offer Lifestyle Guidance on Exercises, Lifestyle and Nutrition to help you towards optimum health.

We would love to share the benefits of this natural method of healthcare with you and your family. To book an appointment please contact us on (07) 4031 4173.
