Is Chiropractic treatment safe?

According to the New Zealand Government's Commission of Inquiry into Chiropractic(1), chiropractic care is a "remarkably safe and clinically effective form of health care. Chiropractors have more thorough training in spinal care than any other health professional. Furthermore, chiropractic is scientifically based. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs."

Will it hurt?

In the majority of cases, not at all. Most of our patients find being adjusted very relaxing.

Do I have to take my clothes off during the appointment?

No. Some Chiropractors require this, however we do not consider it necessary.

Are x-rays necessary?

Only if clinically indicated. If required, x-rays are bulk billed if you hold a Medicare card. Please refer to our page Will I Need X-Rays?

I'm not in pain - why would I need chiropractic care?

Having your spine checked by a Chiropractor is a bit like having your car serviced or seeing the dentist to make sure your teeth aren't decaying. Chiropractors want your body to function optimally at all times. Why wait until it breaks down?

How many appointments will it take?

That depends entirely on you - ie, how long your pain has been present, how well your body holds the corrective adjustments and whether or not you comply with any recommended care schedule and exercises. Our goal is to get people out of pain and restore function, but we find that many of our patients enjoy chiropractic care so much they continue with care to keep them in shape. In a small number of cases, particularly where spinal problems have been present for a long time, occasionally dating back to childhood falls, may require longer term care.

Can Chiropractic improve my sporting performance?

It’s been show that high impact sport can place the same amount of strain on the body as a vehicle collision. Because spinal adjustments reduce the irritation of nerve roots between the vertebrae, the healing time from injuries can be shortened. For high impact athletes, adjustments can increase performance and flexibility while lowering the risk of injury. Adjustments for low impact athletes can help relieve the strain placed on the body.
Do you treat kids, babies and pregnant women?

Of course! As a father himself, Dr Collis is highly experienced in working with pregnant women using techniques that avoid unnecessary pressure to the abdomen. During pregnancy, physiology and endocrine changes occur, preparing the body for gestation and birth. As a result, pelvic changes, postural adaptations and increasing abdominal and back curvature can result in back pain, sciatica, sore legs and feet which can worsen as pregnancy progresses. Chiropractic treatment can assist in relieving pregnancy-related discomfort. Children are welcome to attend appointments with parents and at our Cairns practice we have a special Kids Area with toys, books, colouring-in and games.

Will Chiropractic help if I've had previous spinal surgery?

As Dr Collis has been trained in a wide variety of adjustment techniques, he will be able to recommend gentle treatment for those who have had surgery and aims to reduce post-surgical pain by increasing the function of the area around the surgical site and any other painful sites where the body has compensated for the traumatised area. Note - it is essential that you advise us of previous spinal surgery when making your appointment and bringing any x-rays, scans or other medical records you may have regarding the surgery.

Do you belong to any professional associations?

Dr Collis is a long standing member of the Chiropractors Association of Australia. This Association oversees professional standards including treatment and documentation, and provides ongoing education to Chiropractors in terms of courses, techniques, education and research. Dr Collis is also registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), which is an Australian government body specifically mandated to oversee the safety of the general public when they attend a health practitioner.
